Time for School!

To say that Samantha is excited about school is an understatement.  She started at “big girl” school today.

She was eager to get out of the car during carpool and had to be prompted to turn around and wave goodbye to me.  It’s a good thing I got my hug and kiss before then!

When I picked her up, she told me the things she did today.

  1. Learned how to sit criss-cross applesauce.
  2. Read a book about a panda.
  3. Learned how to raise your hand.
  4. Colored with crayons (but not paint or pencils).
  5. Played on the playground (slide, but not swings).

Her lunch was mostly eaten, and I was left to clean up that used-to-be-shiny-just-hours-before lunch box.  I just read today about a few lunch box ideas so we won’t get in a PB&J rut. I haven’t fully checked them out yet, but maybe they will help: ThisLunchRox and Wendolonia.

Now off to gymnastics!

Nearing the End of an Era

I think we’re approaching the end of an era. The “Brown Baby” era. Brown Baby has gone everywhere with us for years. He’s in all of our pictures, he’s been a staple for trying new things, he’s part of our family. For a while, Sam changed his name to “Bay.” And I think he‘s now a she. I bought a substitute (he needs to get washed every once in a while!) when she was about 24 months old, but she knew the difference and would have nothing to do with the new one.

(I learned my lesson and bought 2 for Ellie and interchange them regularly.)

Lately, Baby’s hiding spots have become increasingly sneaky. Baby gets stuffed into anything and everything that will hold him. Sam will start to play with something else and forget where she’s put him. Then we (and by we, I mean me, Brian and the babysitter) search for hours to find him. However, over the summer, it’s become increasingly easier to put Samantha to bed without him (when we can’t find him). Now that we’re about to start school, I’ve told her that she can’t take him to school with her, and she seems ok with that. I think she still would love to take him, but is somehow adjusting that she can’t. Combine that with actually going to school, and now I feel like she’s all grown up!

I’m sure Baby will be with us for a while longer, but I can see that she’s outgrowing him. And who knew that we’d come across a book called Owen that would be very appropriate these days?

Next Samantha Quotable

Samantha’s school hasn’t started yet, but she seems to be very excited about it.  (Not quite as excited as she is every Thursday when it’s time for gymnastics.  Whoa boy.  She loves it.)  The other night when I was putting her to bed, we were talking about school.  I mentioned that we were going to meet her teacher next week.  Then she got down to business.

Q: “Is Ellie coming to meet my teacher?”

A: “No, it’s just you and me and Daddy.”

Q: “Is Daddy going to take Ellie to school?”

A: “Yes, Daddy will take Ellie to school then he will meet us at your school to meet your teacher.”

Then she sat up a little in the bed, and leaned over to her nightstand.  She began to make a pretend list.  “Then, Mommy.  Daddy take Ellie to school.  Check.  Me, Mommy, Daddy go to my school.  Check.  Meet my teacher.  Check.”  She was very proud of her To Do list and very proud that everything got checked off.

I’m just like every other Type A out there who takes pleasure in scratching things off my never-ending list.  I guess this world will have one more of those.

UPDATE:

I forgot to mention that after Samantha checked everything off her list, she gave it to me and said “Here Mommy.  Hold on to this so that Ellie won’t get it.”  She proceeded to hand me her list for safe keeping.  Silliness.
